A Virtual Reality Art and Story Experience to Address Eating Disorders

and it is free! (links below)

i hope to remove Remove the shame and silence that surrounds eating disorders to promote healing, recovery and prevention.

It’s Not Me is an interactive VR experience featuring the work of Boise-based artist Becka Watkins. Becka’s portfolio and story follows her life from a young child through her struggle and eventual recovery from an eating disorder. As such, this project is meant to act as a conversation piece around topics of life including self-image, abuse, coping and addiction.

Throughout the experience, users are placed in a series of thematic rooms. Each room reflects a moment in Becka’s journey and is accompanied by a set of equally thematic paintings that were created by Becka before, during and after an eating disorder. Paintings can be completed by the user along with hearing accompanying audio from a fictionalized version of Becka’s life written by the artist herself. Each one of these rooms essentially makes a gallery, a place where the artwork stands in the context of Becka’s life.

It’s Not Me has already received media attention from local news sources, including the following pieces: Boise State Students Build Virtual Reality Programs to Help Encourage Social Change, Students Explore Themes of Mental Health Through Virtual Reality Game.

The eating disorder Project may be a tool to:

Help those suffering silently to see that they are not alone, that there is hope, healing and help.

Support personal recovery and help someone else in theirs.

Promote the power that shared experiences have in the therapeutic process and in the prevention of eating disorders.

Help clinicians connect with sufferers to assist opening up dialogue and assist in engagement with their clients.

Educate about the complexities of eating disorders, increasing the understanding that causes and recovery are different for each person.

Educate on the diverse lengths of time recovery may take, and to understand there is often not one “Ah-ha” moment.

Provide a place of purpose for the journey of those affected by eating disorders.

Remove the shame and silence that surrounds eating disorders to promote healing, recovery and prevention.
